Re: Pics of my re-blued Model 8

Thanks Mike. If I could do it over again, I would prob not choose ECB, but I also would consider them again. I think they did a great job on the bluing. One of the first problems that came up was that the metal wasn't rusting well and taking more time than anticipated. So I was upset about the time ...

Pics of my re-blued Model 8

Here are a couple of pics of my 1930 Model 8 .35 Rem. It was a gift from my step-dad. It came rusty, pitted and had a horrible cold-bluing job done sometime in the 60's. I stripped it down and sent it off to East Coast Bluing in NY for a slow rust blue. (Bluing job was great, had other issues with E...

Replacing my firing pin

Howdy, I just got my 1930 .35 Rem Model 8 back from East Coast Bluing with a nice new rust blue job. It looks great, I'll get some pics up soon. However, it came back with a broken firing pin, discovered out on the range yesterday. Bummer not to get to shoot it. I was lucky enough to find not one, b...

Re: Model 8 35 Rem Stripper Clip Alternative

I'd love to hear how they work. I've been intending to buy a couple dozen of them, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet
Are yours one piece or two piece? Brass or steel?
Thanks,
Kendall

Re: Hornady 200gr FTX Lever Evolution Ammo?

Hmmm, I have no empirical evidence other than a slow bullet (remington 200 gr rn) shoots really consistent groups out of my Model 8, and the faster bullets (150gr Remingtons and Hornady Leverlution) are very inconsistent. I don't know if it's the barrel grooves or if it's just my particular rifle. O...

Re: Hello Model 8 forum

Great looking rifle! Does anyone in your family currently hunt with their Model 8/81? This year, mine will take it's first walk in the woods for deer since before 1962 (when it was purchased by my step-dad, who has never hunted deer with it) You'd be a hero on this site if you could get a picture of...

Re: Hornady 200gr FTX Lever Evolution Ammo?

The problem with the Leverevolution rounds in the Model 8/81, is they're too fast for the barrel grooves, and so far in my experience, they are very inconsistent. Gotta keep it around 2000 FPS.

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

The Remington factory 200 gr Core-Lokt round is roughly 2,000 fps at 33,500 CPU(PSI). It may be important to match those numbers. The low CPU(PSI) I stated for the LVR load, may affect cycling of the Model 8/81. I'll need to get more info before I start reloading, that's for sure.

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

This is the results for the 200 rn Hornady bullet with the various Hodgon powders. My first choice would be to use the LVR with 42 grains, 2,040 fps at 25,600 CPU(PSI) Perfect speed and very low pressure, then maybe the Varget with maybe 37 grains would maybe get the right results. I also lean towar...

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Great reloading chart here - http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle My understanding is that we need to be right around 2000 fps for best accuracy. The slow turning grooves in our barrels want a slow bullet. My Model 8 loves the Remington 200 gr RN and shoots them very straight. It DOES NOT like...

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Thanks! That pretty much convinces me that most of the various country of origin stripper clips will work. Pretty great alternative to buying one made for the Model 8/81. They are available many places and they are cheap. Off the topic, but do you do those reloads? I've been told that I should use a...

Re: .35 Model 81 questions

My Model 8 .35 loves those Remington factory 200gr RN. They seem to be the most accurate out of my gun (also I think the slowest round, which is good for the large, slow spiral of the bore) I've found some Hornady 200gr RN for reloading and will practice with those, but I'll always use those Rem 200...

8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Anyone ever used any 8mm Mauser clips in your Model 8/81? I'm understanding they will work, but wanted to know if there is any difference between an Argentine Mauser clip and a German one for instance. I think I'd pick the two piece versions instead of the single piece clips. Lots of 8mm ammo clip o...

Re: My Model 8 is going to the hospital, but in a good way

Thanks Cam, I had pretty much decided on the slow rust bluing and this settles it. Matt from ECBluing sounds like he'll take his time with the rust bluing and the few pics I've seen of ECBluing rust bluing jobs look really good. Once I get it back, I'll get the sights worked out and get some rounds ...

My Model 8 is going to the hospital, but in a good way

I inherited a nice 1930 Model 8 in .35 Rem (along with reloading dies, bullets, cases and a few rounds) It came to me a mixture of a gorgeous patina over 75% of it...and the other 25% had been hokey cold blued and all those areas were rusty and looked terrible. Unfortunately it was not localized, an...

Re: What caliber is best for reloading?

I've been searching high and low online for bullets in .35 Rem, Remington 200gr RN can't be found though I did see some Speer 180gr in one place, however I couldn't find any Remington 9 1/2 rifle/ or heavy rifle primers of any brand anywhere. I'm considering getting into casting and think I'll use t...
