Re: Old 8/81 hunting photo

Took a closer look at the rifle on display in the Freeport Bean store and read the book a little more and it turns out LL's rifle is in .25, not .32 (for those who were dying to know!).

Model 8-E at auction

FYI. The September edition of The Maine Sportsman has an ad for Poulin Auctions, which included a listing in their upcoming 10/3-6/14 firearms auction for a Remington 8-E (expert grade) in .35 Remington if anyone's in the market. I've got no association whatsoever, but suspect folks here would be in...

Re: 2-Gun Action Match with a Remington Model 8 (video)

That was excellent to watch ... except now my shoulder hurts. Ouch!

Nice work and thanks for putting this up.

Old 8/81 hunting photo

Found this recently at a local bookstore: http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff69/perswig/4th%20album/004_zps18063fd5.jpg and came across this pic toward the back of the book. http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff69/perswig/4th%20album/010_zpsc75ca574.jpg The book, a manual by L.L. himself, was firs...

Re: .35 Model 81 questions

Wanted to stop and say thanks! Due in large part to Sarge's encouragement, and a prolonged bout of rain, I finally got motivated to pull apart my newer 81 and clean the beejeezus out of it. Whoa, talk about gunk! However, no power tools used, didn't have any parts left over, and low and behold, bolt...

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Thanks, Adam. Hear that, Joe? Tell us all your secrets!!!! Seriously, though, not much info out there on 8/81-specific load favorites. There's a great thread at Marlinowners comparing .35rem bullet options and GBO has a good smattering of people's data, but not for these rifles. And it's all new to ...

Re: 8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Adam (or Joe?), what kinda bullets (and loads, if you're willing to share) do you have there? Look like soft-point RN? 180s, 200s? I haven't been able to find 200gr RN but as I mentioned over in Troubleshooting, my .35 seems to really like them and would like some reloader feedback as well. Thanks! ...

Re: Model 10 on its way to me soon

I don't like the looks of that chuck of stock off near the receiver (looks pretty dry?, does gun wood get dryrot?), but the patina, color, and wear of the rest of the stock and fore-end are pretty darn sexy.

Nice rig!

Re: .35 Model 81 questions

^^ I've not had the time or the weather (both trips out with this 81 have been at ~15F and blowing!) to do much shooting, but I'd have to agree that the rifle seemed to like the 200gr RN both in handling and accuracy. Shooting off-hand at 50yds, I got 4 in a 3" spread without trying. With glove...

Re: .35 Model 81 questions

Thanks for the link, Sarge. I hadn't gotten to that one; watched the Jim Green video of taking the rifle down (not including barrel and bolt), so I THINK I can manage w/o my usual go-to tools (it'll be hard, though). The step-by-step pics in the flikr set are likely to be much more helpful for the a...

.35 Model 81 questions

So I think I got spoiled by the first 81... A 2nd rifle, in .35 Remington, followed me home recently, but has some kinks to iron out. And I'm mostly a Sawzall/4#sledge-kinda guy, so delicate mechanics are new territory for me... The bolt assembly does not lock back reliably, either when manually cyc...

Re: Barrel shroud sling screw

Ah, thanks, Phyr! Will drop a line to each of them, as well as continuing to check in here. I belatedly found a thread at the end of the troubleshooting section that suggests there may be at least two different types of tapping done over the years for this screw/attachment site. If true, makes it a ...

Barrel shroud sling screw

Would like to find a replacement screw for the forward (barrel shroud) sling mount for a newly-acquired 81. The one that came with the rifle rattled off and was nearly lost in the snow as I was checking cycling of the old girl; initial impression is that the threads of the shroud are good but those ...

Very cool photo!
Anyone have a guess as to location? Those hunters sure are dressed 'sporty'.

Nice addition to other 8/81 working pics here.
Thanks!

Re: More proofmark questions

Nice weather today had me back at the pit briefly, where I got to run through another 3 mags. For those keeping score (and going through the same process), 150gr Federal softpoint, 110yd (that's where my 'bench' rock sits), seated and rolled jacket rest, groups of 4. First = horrible (8" spread...

Re: More proofmark questions

Aye, Sarge, the Savage 42, while MAYBE a reasonable utilitarian option for survival or skwirrel bagging, to me has none of the beauty, heft, and solidity (is that a word?) of the 24s. Had we met a couple months ago, I would have offered you a .30-30/12 that I bought and fairly quickly resold as the ...

More proofmark questions

Having just finished a Savage 24 bender (now the proud owner of 4, and a kissing cousin 242), I also managed to pick up a '48 Woodsmaster, chambered in .300 Sav. I'd never seen or shot an 8/81 before, just loved the curvy lines at first sight and decided to find one in either .35 or .300 since I don...
