Mine is in .30 Remington. I looked at caliber conversion for a while, but eventually I decided there were only two reasonable choices: A) sell the .30 and buy another Model 8 in .300 Savage (the local Wal-Mart carries .300 on the shelf!) or B) reload .30 Remington .30 brass is only intermittently av...

Grafs is showing new .30 Remington brass in stock now. If you reload, RCBS has the dies. It might take a few extra weeks if they have to make them up.

What kind of feed rate are you using? I turned bags of .38 Special into 9mm Largo back in the day. I used a flat-topped form tool, ground so I came in from the side to turn the rim off, moved the carriage toward the headstock a bit, then came in for the extractor groove. Since the extractor groove w...

The dude with the lamp looks eerily like Darren McGavin...

I have an SMLE that used to be a floor lamp; I've been collecting pieces to return it to shootability.

The AK guys used to be into making AK-47 table lamps; there used to be a lot of that on the builder forums back when kits were cheap.

I'm still impressed by how little recoil the Model 8 has. Shooting with a friend, his .30-30 Marlin felt like a cannon by comparison.

I've read that the ".30 Remington" was first known as the ".30-30 Remington" and the second "30" was quickly dropped to prevent confusion with the .30-30 Winchester. Considering the hassle I've had searching for ".30 Remington" ammunition and getting hits on &...

Re: Making .32 Remington Brass

I found a small amount of .30 Remington ammo, and someone here sold me some brass, so I haven't done the .30-30 conversion yet. For those who are thinking of it... I used to convert .38 Special brass to 9mm Largo, back when it was unobtainium and 9x23 didn't exist yet. At the time I had an elderly A...

Model 8 carry bag

I live in a place where I don't particularly want the neighbors to know I have guns in the house when nobody is home. So I use various "sports" bags to schlep rifles out to the car. The Mosin 91/30 is so long that I wound up with a "golf bag cover", which is a bag you put your go...

Re: New company for my 35 rem. Krieger conversion 300 savage

The fixed magazine is one of the few things I don't like about my Model 8. The mag lips are way down there, and I broke a thumbnail once trying to load it. Yeah, I know, but it hurt, and kind of soured my shooting session. Plus my particular rifle seems to have some sharp bits in there too. I imagin...

A previous owner had fitted a scope rail to my Model 8. Shooting it a few days ago, I realized my aging eyes weren't cooperating in the whole "sight picture" thing. So I may try a scope. Can anyone guess what kind of scope rings this rail might need? The width across the dovetail tips is a...

Oh, and while I'm at it - pulling the barrel only takes a moment, but the sling connecting the two pieces was awkward. I decided to take a sling off, so I looked at the swivels. Hmm, flathead screws. The screwdriver fit was poor, so I looked more closely at the screw slots. Hmm. Radiused bottom. I f...

Missed the birthday

Last year I bought my first Model 8. I collected brass, loading dies, and some loaded ammunition for it. Other things blocked a range trip - the nearest real range is 60 miles one way, so it doesn't happen often anyway. Time rolled on, and I planned to make a range excursion last month, since my 8 w...

It was great seeing a Model 8 strutting its stuff. I'm no faster with strippers on my Mosin than you are with them on the 8. Reaching across with my support hand, it's hard to find the charger guide unless I turn the gun so I can look. I guess it's easier for right-handed people. You'd be in the sam...

Given how expensive SMLE barrels are, and the hassle timing and headspacing them, I'm surprised reboring isn't more common. Of course, in the USA and Canada the price of reboring and rifling approaches the average cost of just finding another rifle with a better barrel. Australian law made non-milit...

Any range reports on the sabots yet? I picked up a bag of sabots from E. Arthur Brown a while back, thinking that they might be fun to play with. I forgot to post an update - the RCBS dies showed up from Grafs in mid-February. Also, I found that like the .30 Remington AR, the 10mm Auto is also based on a cut-down .25-.30-.32 Remington case. The Auto Mag was a short-recoil system; the upper barrel assembly moves back about 5/16". The bolt is unlocked by a cross-pin in the cam track and the bits cycle the rest of the way by inertia. It's the same basic system as the 1898(?) Schwarzlose pistol. The Frommer Stop's mechanism looks very...
