Re: My son's great grandfather's Model 8
re: .25-35, I'll have to check again , but my recollection is that the .25-35 cartridge, also rimless, was a discontinued predecessor to the later adopted .25 Rem and a subtlely but distinctly differenct cartridge, and that Model 8's chambered in .25-35 were rechambered for .25 Remington for no char...

My son's great grandfather's Model 8
My son inherited his GGF's Model 8, SN# 24,XXX made ca. 1910-1912 in .25-35 Remington but converted (presumably by the factory) to .25 Remington. Breach is still marked .25-35 Rem. He also inherited 5 boxes of original .25 ammunition. I put five rounds thru it and it cycled fine and still makes roun...

cracked barrel shroud
Hello -I have noticed that the barrel shroud is cracked on the bottom along the flange that screws into the receiver. It had apparently cracked once before and was rather crudely welded but that has given way (talking decades ago). An amateur gunsmith nearby says it can be hard soldered versus welde...

cracked barrel shroud
Hi. Recently refurbished a model 8 passed down to my son from his maternal great grandfather. Decades ago the barrel shroud cracked right at the juncture of the flange that attaches to the frame, and it was crudely brazed in place. Recently my son noticed that it has seperated again (not completely)...

Re: New Model 8 owner
thx all this is all good info, especially the cautions on old brass. I do intend to shot this gun. I was impressed by the power of that 25 Remington. A nice round. I also have his Marlin 39 from the early 50s. Cleaned it up. replaced the missing front and rear sights and replaced the broken magazine...

Re: New Model 8 owner
Thanks guys. All great inputs. Will post some pics and progress on bringing this old Model 8 back to life. Thanks to the video available on this site, have begun to strip the receiver and I have never seen such gunk...hard as a rock after all these years and still the gun works. The old game warden ...

New Model 8 owner
We've inherited a Model 8 from my son's great grandfather with a straight grip serial # 24xxx. He was a game warden in Wyoming in the 20's and '30s. The Breach is marked .25-35 but it shoots .25 Rem, . He must have bought it used, as the SN appears to put the date of mfg around 1912. I have to say, ...
