WTB 81 in .300 Savage with special request(s)

On my previous 81, the "gunsmith" messed up installing the weaver scope mount. scope didn't hold zero and I sold it for a loss. I would ideally want a 81 in .300 Savage that has been professionally checkered. I assume that wont be the case, so it breaks down as three requests: 1.) Remingto...

Re: 81 35 cal ammo

hornady makes a 200gr leverolution bullet in .35 cal. If i had 35 rem i would look good into that.

Re: reloading .300 savage

concerning the flat spot, im talking about the top of the neck as if you are looking into the cartridge. Its not perfectly round. There is a flat spot. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Neck sizing brings the neck back true so im not overly concerned.

reloading .300 savage

everyone talks about watching for pressure signs but ive also read the due to the low SAAMI max pressure for this cartridge that your first pressure sign could be your last as the gun blows up. While reading that article there was a picture of a savage 99 that essentially split in half at the chambe...

Re: shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage

i meant no disrespect roger. I guess i really dont see a reason to limit loads for the 81 as all data acknowledges the limited SAAMI pressure that comes with .300 savage already. Maybe in the late 40s technology, equipment, and quality were limited and thats a cause for reduced loads but disassembli...

Re: shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage

thanks dwalt and roger for your sides to crimping or not. Ill look further into that. On another note ive seen heavy discrepancy with using lighter loads for savage 1899 or 99s. I have also seen one article about reducing loads slightly for the 81 also, "out of respect for their age". Is t...

Re: shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage

do you crimp your bullets on? How about full length resizing vs. Neck sizing? With the lee loader it only neck sizes and im hoping thats enough, or ill purchase a lee handpress. Have you tested bullet depth as far as distance from the landings or even touching the landings? Thanks for all this great...

Re: shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage

Roger, thanks for the offer. I just purchased a lee handloader. My question right now is what would be a good powder to start loading?

dwalt, i had actually commented on that post. I am thinking about doing it myself. I dont know if im confident in doing it though.

shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage

im getting ready to start handloading so i figured id take the almost 2 boxes of factory ammo to the range. 1 is a full box of remington and the other is 12 rounds of Hornady. All i had with me was a sweatshirt and sweatpants from the car to use to steady/lean the gun on. The pants i used for my sho...

possible side mount for 8/81

cant tell by pics but i thought i saw a 81 with this mount. Description about savage 300 breakdown rifle makes me think he meant a breakdown rifle chambered for .300 savage and hopefully a 8 or 81. Anyways heres the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Savage-300-flip-scope-mount-RARE-Pachmayr-/160...

converting 81 to detachable magazine

I have seen this topic covered in the past but can not for the life of me find it again. An individual said he could convert the gun but that there are drawbacks. He never discussed what they were though. I have a few questions concerning a conversion: what are the drawbacks? are there options withi...

scope mount for 81

I have purchased a side mount Weaver base already, but I think I want to go a different route. I really like the Williams side mount and the Stith mount after that. Please let me know if you have an interesting scope mount for sale or come across one. Thanks

how to load stripper clips

Just looking at the magazine and the length of the shells, I'm not seeing how you would load the clips. I don't have a clip yet but am looking at picking up a few. The biggest issue I see is how the aft end of the mag has curved in tabs to prevent the shells from just popping out. Thanks in advance

Re: New 81 owner

those pics were prior to fixing the varnish. It does appear to be a bit lighter in color due to the dye in the original varnish. I do have a question that developed after loading my 81 for the first time. At the rear end of the magazine, there is the metal tabs that curve in preventing the shell fro...

New 81 owner

I had been on the market for a semi auto hunting rifle for quite some time. I had a Ruger M77 that I sold to fund my new gun. After looking into the Remington 8's I just couldn't bring myself to purchase a relative weak and obsolete caliber weapon. Insert the 81 chambered in .300 Savage. I found thi...
